I’ve been tossing around the idea of inviting native Japanese speakers to ask their English questions on this site. I’ll list some pros and cons of doing this, but I’m really interested in getting your thoughts.

Pros

Reciprocation is the key to building a strong community

I think that some people are hesitant to ask a question on our site because they feel that they may not be able to answer another person’s question, thus leading to less interaction.

If more people had a chance to contribute (i.e. by answering English questions), they would feel more comfortable in asking their own Japanese questions.

Native speakers help answer questions

We have some very generous native Japanese speakers that are answering questions on our site (we also have some amazing people on this site who have mastered the Japanese language and are sharing their knowledge!) It would be incredible if we could have more native speakers helping to answer questions.

We have something unique to offer

Most of us on this site are native speakers of English that speak (at various levels) Japanese. I think that gives us some unique insight in helping a Japanese speaker to learn English.

Cons

Tags could get confusing

Right off the bat, people asking questions would have to tag their question as either “Japanese” or “English”. That leads to the next issue – what to do about the other tags. For example, do we need to go from the tag “grammar” to “j_grammar” and “e_grammar”?

Would we be diluting our community?

For example, we would be going from a community of Japanese language learners to a community of Japanese language learners AND English language learners.

Overall, I think that inviting native Japanese speakers to ask their English questions would be a net positive for our community, but I would really like to get your thoughts.

Please voice your opinions.

Thanks!!

Yes, I think it would be very helpful (and fun!) to include them.

I think this is a wonderful idea. I think it's important for people who are in the early stages of learning Japanese to have the opportunity to contribute something to the community, especially since reputation is extremely hard to earn when all you can do is ask questions. As well, it would broaden the amount of people able to answer questions thoughtfully, as i think right now we only have around four people who are always on target with their answers. Let's do it! ^_^

As far as tags, it's possible that we could just put J-(insert tag) and E-(insert tag) to make it less confusing :)

Thanks for all your support! I think we are going to go ahead and do this. I’ll make a more official announcement and invitation to native Japanese speakers next week! – RealWay Media Mar 16 at 23:43
yay! let me know if you need help re-tagging things, haha :D – The Momohime Mar 17 at 1:30
OK, thanks for the offer! Let’s see if we get a lot of English questions first (in other words, let’s see if native Japanese people are interested in asking their English questions on our site). If so, then we can start to clean up the tags. Thanks again! – RealWay Media Mar 17 at 21:24

I think it would do well for both sides of the language learning equation to interact with one another. It would certain help develop both's sides views of each other's culture and way of life, on top the obvious benefits of hearing info about their chosen language straight from the horse's mouth

Sounds like people like the idea!

The best example of a two-way community like that I have seen is lang-8.com. Maybe there are some lessons to be learned from them?

if you are are gonna do it i reckon don't retag things, just have 2 sections, 1 for learning japanese and 1 for learning english?

That’s a great idea and I could set up another site, but I wouldn’t be able to have reputation points cross over (sorry, I’m not that good of a programmer:) My suggestion would be to give the English questions a try and hold off on re-tagging to see if native Japanese speakers are interested in being a part of our community. If the community takes off, then we can see how best to go about re-tagging/organizing the site. Thanks for your input! – RealWay Media Mar 21 at 18:27
