I'm looking for a good English to Japanese dictionary application for the iPhone.

I live in Japan. I just started learning the language a month ago and I was looking at denshi jisho at BIC Camera, Yodobashi, etc. but they are really expensive and also, the controls are in Kanji and as a complete beginner, I find that I cannot even use one!

Hands down kotoba! It's free like everyone said, plus they just added a HUGE section where you can veiw all kanji sorted by JLPT levels, school grades, etc. and do a seach for kanji using radicals... I really don't think there is anything out there that could do more!

That's exactly the app I was thinking of. – JapanNewbie Feb 7 at 3:09
I just downloaded this app. It's half the MB as Kotoba and I love it!!! So many features! – The Momohime Mar 16 at 7:27

Hey Rachel!

I have actually never used this because it's a bit expensive for my needs, but word on the street is that the app called JAPANESE is the best.

Here's a link: http://bit.ly/a3mKc9

It's expensive, but it looks pretty comprehensive!

Kotoba is free and amazing!

I personally prefer Kotoba, it's based on JMDict which is fine for most people, and best of all it's free.

「i英辞郎」seems to be a good one, too. It is 1,000 yen. It lets you "register" the word you have just looked up so that you can read about it more in details when you have time later. It comes with a "quiz" feature, too.

Here is the URL with some screen shots. http://www.sokoide.com/ieijiro/118/

Japanese My Way for iPhone has a dictionary based on JMDICT where you can search in Japanese and English and answers are sorted by JLPT level. It helps find the most commonly used stuff because the JMDICT dictionary is huge. On top of that you can add words to flash cards for both guessing and writing practice.
