There are a lot of great free resources out there that can help you learn katakana, hiragana, and kanji.

You may want to start off by checking out the Genki resource page to get yourself familiarized: http://genki.japantimes.co.jp/self/self.en.html

Genki is a really popular textbook, so you may want to consider purchasing it if you continue to study Japanese (and we hope you do!)

From there, I would suggest using a flash card program like smart.fm or Anki – (both free)

Here is a link to a bunch of katakana decks on smart.fm http://smart.fm/goals/search?keyword=katakana

I would suggest you start with katakana – that way you’ll be able to read loan words right away. From there you can hit the hiragana flash cards.

Good luck!

I agree with RealWay- Genki is one of the best books to start with, BUT, if you're looking to just focus on Kanji, the Basic Kanji books (amazon.com/Basic-Kanji-Book-Vol-1/dp/4893580914/…) are really, really helpful, as they put more emphasis on radicals, the building blocks of Kanji. If you can begin to understand radicals, kanji learning will be far more enjoyable and efficient! Ganbatte! – The Momohime Feb 23 at 0:01

My recommendations:

Hiragana/Katakana: realkana.com

Kanji: readthekanji.com

Also: hellodamage.com/kanjidicks/main.htm

Take a look at the resources on Smart.fm. There is a range of great Japanese resources covering Kana through Kanji.

They also have a free iPhone app, which is great for quick study sessions during commutes.
