どういう こういう そういう

When learning/encountering new words I usually use the Rikaichan application for FireFox to see how it is defined in English, and then I refer to Space ALC (a great website) to see how the word is used in sentences. But for some reason these words are leaving me stumped and they are used quite frequently (at least from what I have seen...watching Japanese television programs online). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

They seem very similar to こんな、そんな、and あんな. How are different from each other. When should one verse the other be used. It's similarity is throwing me off the path of understanding. Thanks in advance once again. – abdullah Feb 6 at 19:23

Those words follow the familiar こ、そ、ど pattern found in words like ここ、そこ、どこ、 and これ、それ、どれ. They're actually こう、 そう、 and どう (this way, that way, what way) + 言う (a varied expression deserving study on its own). So you can think of こういう as "like this", そういう as "like that", and どういう as "like how?"

What kind of strange expressions have you seen them in on TV? Maybe we can help you puzzle them out.
