I know that "moshi moshi" is used when answering the telephone, but what is the literal translation?

I believe it's 申し申し which is something like "speaking, speaking" |

It's not only used when answering the phone, but also when it appears your conversation partner is no longer listening to you. In that situation it's kind of like "hellooooooooo" |
