You may want to start off by checking out the Genki resource page to get yourself familiarized:
http://genki.japantimes.co.jp/self/self.en.html

Genki is a really popular textbook, so you may want to consider purchasing it if you continue to study Japanese (and we hope you do!)

From there, I would suggest using a flash card program like smart.fm or Anki – (both free)

Here is a link to a bunch of katakana decks on smart.fm
http://smart.fm/goals/search?keyword=katakana

I would suggest you start with katakana – that way you’ll be able to read loan words right away. From there you can hit the hiragana flash cards.

Good luck!

There is a range of great Japanese resources covering Kana through Kanji.

They also have a free iPhone app, which is great for quick study sessions during commutes.
